Hiking and Remembering : Historical Hikes and Sing-along in Memory of Yitzhak Rabin

KKL-JNF and the Yitzhak Rabin Center invite you to a special program in Rabin Park, in honor of the 17th Memorial Day for the assassination of the late Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin.

09:00 – 12:30 - Historical Hikes in Rabin Park on Burma Road (details below)

10:00 – 12:00 - Meeting with 1948 veterans

13:00 – 14:00 - Sing-along at the foot of Mitzpe Harel with:
  • Ms. Dalia Rabin, Director of the Rabin Center;
  • Mr. Efi Stenzler, KKL-JNF World Chairman;
  • Ziknei Hakfar band

More about the event at Yitzhak Rabin Park

In the course of the day, you will be able to accompany veterans of the battles of 1948, and KKL-JNF tour guides, on outings suitable for amateur hikers, expert hikers and private vehicles, as well as bus tours, jeep tours and bicycle tours. All outings will include sites in the park related to the battles of the Independence War such as the Command Post Ridge, the Convoy Ridge, Burma Road and the Jeep Road.

The events will include the inauguration of the 1948 Trail, a route 1.5 kilometers long, which was developed by KKL-JNF, and which descends from Radar Hill to the Kiryat Anavim military cemetery. Along the way, there will be a variety of activity stations including guided observation points, actors, and study circles about the life of Yitzhak Rabin and democracy in Israel.

The day’s events will conclude with a gathering in the Scouts Field on Burma Road for a sing-along with the Ziknei Hakfar band, including songs from 1948 and favorite historical Israeli songs.

Opening the 1948 Trail

For amateur hikers – from Radar Hill to the military cemetery in Kiryat Anavim, via the Sanatorium Command Post and the Hatzvi Yisrael Memorial. Route is 1.5 kilometers long, and duration is about 3 hours. The excursions set out from 09:00 to 10:00 and conclude at the sing-along on Burma Road.

From Mitzpe Harel to the Avimor Ruins

For amateur hikers – on trails overlooking Burma Road. Circular route is 3 kilometers long, and duration is about 2 hours. The excursions set out from 09:00 to 11:00 and conclude at the sing-along on Burma Road.

From Shaar Hagai Scenic Lookout to Mitzpe Harel

For expert hikers – via Ein Hille and Mitzpe Abie Natan. Route is 8 kilometers long and duration is about 3 hours. Excursions start out from 08:00 to 08:30, include transporting hikers to the beginning of the route and concluding at the sing-along on Burma Road.

From Eshtaol Nursery to Mitzpe Harel

For private cars – via the Panoramic Scenic Lookout, the Serpentine Observation Point and the Fig Tree Recreation Area. Route is 8 kilometers (driving on forest roads), and duration is about 2 hours including stops at guide stations. The excursions set out from 09:00 to 11:00 and conclude at the sing-along on Burma Road.

From Mitzpe Harel to Einot Susin

For cyclists - Circular route is 7 kilometers long, and duration is about 2 hours. Bike tours start out from 09:00 to 11:00 and conclude at the sing-along on Burma Road.

From Ayalon Canada Park to Mitzpe Harel

For ATVs – via the Command Post Line/Shluhat Mishlatim, the Jerusalem Breakthrough Memorial, the Convoy Line and parts of historical Burma Road. Route is 25 kilometers long, and duration is about 2 hours. The excursions set out from 09:00 to 10:00 and conclude at the sing-along on Burma Road.

Excursions to sites in Rabin Park

Bus tours for organized groups – all tours include a stop at one of the observation points in the park (Alexandroni Memorial, Shaar Hagai Scenic Lookout, Mitzpe Harel) and a drive along Burma Road, via Ein Mesila, Ein Hille and the dispatch pipeline. Duration about 3 hours concluding at the sing-along on Burma Road.

All excursions include interactive activities and fascinating encounters with the stories of 1948.
At the end of the outings there will be a gathering at the foot of Mitzpe Harel:

“Singing Blue and White” – a medley of 1948 songs, favorite Israeli songs, readings and archival film footage, with the Ziknei Hakfar band.
