The applied research institute at Kinneret, established by Kinneret Academic College and KKL-JNF in partnership with WaterEdge.IL, is launching as a new strategic initiative for the north and for the State of Israel as a whole. The institute will focus on research in the fields of natural water source ecology, water engineering, and agrotech while integrating advanced digital technologies. It will offer a unique model that bridges applied academic research with Israeli and international industry. In so doing it aims to advance solutions to pressing challenges in resource management, ecosystem restoration, strengthening regional resilience, and preparing for a changing world.
The institute will be integrated into the evolving ecosystem of Kinneret Academic College, the KIC WaterEdge.IL innovation center, research bodies, and additional partners in Israel and around the world, serving as a direct link between research, entrepreneurship, and industry.

Alongside promoting collaborations with the water and agrotech industries, the institute is expected to encourage the development of knowledge and intellectual property, the establishment of pilot sites, the commercialization of technologies, and the advancement of new ventures. In this way, it will strengthen not only the region’s standing but also Israel’s ability to lead innovation in water and sustainability.
Beyond its research and economic contributions, the institute will also play a central role in building the human capital of the future. It is expected to bring together researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and students; establish research groups and advanced laboratories; and operate in close connection with academic teaching and the training of a new generation of scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs.
Prof. David Mendelovich, President of Kinneret Academic College:“We are establishing the Kinneret Institute for Water and Sustainability Research מתוך a deep understanding that the challenges of the 21st century require a close connection between academia, industry, and entrepreneurship. The institute is intended to place the north at the forefront of innovation in water and sustainability and to generate practical solutions with regional and national impact. For us, this is not only a research initiative but also a strategic investment in the human capital of the future—one that will train a new generation of scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs and contribute to the resilience and growth of the State of Israel.”
Dr. Doron Markel, Chief Scientist of KKL-JNF:“KKL-JNF sees the establishment of the Kinneret Institute for Water and Sustainability Research as an important step in the development of the Galilee and the north. As an organization that has been working for over 120 years to preserve and develop Israel’s land and water resources, we are proud to take part in an initiative that connects applied research, innovation, and community. The institute will serve as a driver of regional growth in the north, promote sustainable solutions to water and environmental challenges, and attract students and researchers to the Kinneret region. It will also strengthen Israel’s position as a global leader in water technologies and the management of natural water systems.”
