On Tuesday, February 28, H.E. Mr. Edgar Chagwa Lungu, President of the Republic of Zambia, became the ninety-second head of state to plant a tree at KKL-JNF’s Grove of Nations in Jerusalem.
KKL-JNF Chief of Protocol Andy Michelson welcomed the distinguished guest and his entourage, which included eight senior ministers of the Zambian government who were in Israel for extensive discussions with their Israeli counterparts.
Michelson noted that heads of states have been planting trees in KKL-JNF’s Grove of Nations, which is located just beneath Mount Herzl in Jerusalem, for the past twelve years.
“KKL-JNF was founded 115 years ago, and since then, we have been planting trees, building water reservoirs, blazing trails, creating bike paths and much more. We do this for the benefit of all of Israel’s citizens, regardless of religion or ethnicity.
“The weather today is perfect and the almond trees are blossoming. You have come here directly after your visit to Yad Vashem, and there is something very meaningful about planting a tree, a symbol of life and growth, after such an experience. You will be planting an olive tree, and in the Bible, the dove brings Noah an olive branch after the flood as a symbol of life and peace. Olive trees take a long time to grow, we might not be here to enjoy its fruits, so it’s something we do for the future, for our children and grandchildren.”
President Lungu said that it was a great honor for him to join the many heads of state who have planted a tree in the Grove of Nations.
“Being here, I am reminded of nature and creation. When I see people promoting peace by respecting nature, I find myself at peace. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to plant an olive tree, this practice shines a great light in a time of climate change and global warming. And yes, this is a very important gesture after visiting Yad Vashem.
“I am amazed to hear that you have been doing this for 115 years. Zambia is a beacon of peace and stability in Africa, and I pray that the tree I plant will be a blessing for peace as it gives shade and fruit. Both our countries, and all of us, should work continuously for peace and humanity. Thank you very much and God bless you.”
After President Lungu concluded his remarks, Mr. Meron Reuben, Israeli Foreign Ministry Chief of State Protocol, read the Planter’s Prayer in Hebrew. He was followed by Brig. General (ret.) John Albert Bulawayo, the Zambian Chief of State Protocol, who recited the prayer in English.
It was then time for the President to plant his olive tree, which he did with great care.
Before departing in his motorcade, the president asked if someone would make sure to water his tree.
He smiled when he was reassured that thanks to either the rain or the KKL-JNF staff, his tree would be well taken care of.
