The Bell Rings for Me: KKL-JNF is exhibiting exclusive photographs depicting schools in the pre-independence and early statehood years

As the new schoolyear approaches on September 1, KKL-JNF is releasing these exclusive photographs dating as far back as the pre-independence years.

The photographs show the way studies were pursued and how schools were run. These photos show the students, of all ages, and the teachers, engaging in nature and Hebrew studies, as well as other documentation exhibiting the classrooms and lessons from all around the country.

A picture emerges of education as a key component in the formation of identity and schools serving as a social tapestry weaving cohesion already eighty years ago. These pictures show how the classrooms transformed, how the methods of delivering lessons evolved, and on what foundations the education system in Israel has been shaped into the modern, all-encompassing structure we know today.

Efrat Sinai, Archiving Manager at KKL-JNF: “Through these images, which are being shown in public for the first time, the general public can witness the profound value of education to Israeli society. It testifies to how we, as a people and as a nation, have succeeded in providing education and a social framework right from the earliest days of our independence. This ability has shaped generations and has helped us become who we are, in terms of the progress and integration through the broad range of subjects taught. We at KKL-JNF are doing all we can to collect rare materials and pieces of history, which allow us to take an insider’s view of the formation of the State of Israel”.
